Grand Steel has acquired a new toll processing facility in Chattanooga, Tenn., marking the third location for the flat-rolled steel service center.
Previously the site of Maksteel Chattanooga, Grand Steel began operations at the 126,000 square foot facility on Thursday. With this buy, Grand Steel aims to enhance its southern operations, building on the results of its Clinton, Tenn., facility.
“Expanding into Chattanooga is a natural progression for us,” Grand Steel President Mike Barnett said in a statement. He noted the region is home to a booming industrial and manufacturing market.
Barnett added that having both rail and barge access along with an in-house trucking fleet “allows us to better serve our customers with greater efficiency and lower transportation costs.” He excitedly told SMU how this was one of the few steel facilities to have access to barge unloading in the area.
The company said the new facility will allow it to improve service for its vendors and customers in the southern US region, particularly in the automotive and manufacturing industries. Its two toll processing locations in Tennessee will operate under the name Grand Steel Processing, while its direct sales business will continue under the Grand Steel Products name.
Grand Steel is a family-owned steel service center. Headquartered in Wixom, Mich., it processes hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and coated steel products.
