Domestic raw steel production rebounded from a five-month low last week, according to the latest release by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Production now stands at the highest recorded weekly rate since the first week of June.
Total US steel mill output was estimated to have been 1,735,000 short tons (st) in the week ending July 13. This is up 40,000 st or 2.4% from the week prior. Raw production last week was 1.2% higher than the year-to-date (YTD) weekly average of 1,715,000 st. Production is up 2.7% compared to the same week one year ago when production totaled 1,689,000 st.
The mill capability utilization rate was 78.1% last week. This rate is higher than the week prior (76.3%) and also higher than this time last year (74.3%).
YTD production is up to 47,304,000 st at a capability utilization rate of 76.5%. That is down 2.5% from the same time frame last year, when 48,502,000 st were produced at a capability utilization rate of 77.3%.
Weekly production by region is shown below, with the weekly changes noted in parentheses:
- Northeast – 132,000 st (up 5,000 st)
- Great Lakes – 588,000 st (up 13,000 st)
- Midwest – 211,000 st (up 11,000 st)
- South – 737,000 st (up 7,000 st)
- West – 67,000 st (up 4,000 st)
Editor’s note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends. The monthly AISI “AIS 7” report is available by subscription and provides a more detailed summary of domestic steel production.

Final Thoughts
We had an October surprise here at SMU on Wednesday. I was working from the CRU office in Pittsburgh, and the internet connection briefly went out. As luck would have it, that happened smack in the middle of a live Community Chat webinar. Fortunately, my colleague David Schollaert stepped in, Zekelman Industries CEO Barry Zekelman rolled with the punches – and the show went on. Could there be any more October surprises in store for us and for the steel market?
Apparent steel supply eases in August
The volume of finished steel entering the US market declined in August from July, according to SMU’s analysis of data from the US Department of Commerce and the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Referred to as ‘apparent steel supply,’ we calculate this monthly rate by combining domestic steel mill shipments and finished US steel imports and deducting total US steel exports.
