SMU Price Ranges: HRC Slips Below $1,200, Floor at $1,000?

Written by Brett Linton

US hot-rolled coiled prices have fallen below $1,200 per ton ($60 per cwt) for the first time since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine.

SMU’s hot-rolled coil price stands at $1,190 per ton ($59.50 per cwt), down $65 per ton from last week and down $290 per ton from a post-war high of $1,480 per ton in mid-April.

And market participants said they expected HR prices to continue to fall in the weeks ahead. They debate remains not whether prices will fall but how fast and how far.

If the current rate of decline were to continue, HR would be slightly below $1,000 per ton in just three weeks.

A similar trend was observed in cold-rolled (down $65 per ton), galvanized (down $40 per ton), and Galvalume (down $40 per ton). Plate bucked the overall downward trend and was flat at $1,830 per ton.

All of SMU’s price momentum indicators remain at lower, meaning we expect declining prices over the next 30 days.
