June Steel Exports Up 6.5 Percent Over May

U.S. steel exports in June 2018 totaled 913,705 net tons (828,900 metric tons), up 6.5 percent over May and up 0.3 percent from June 2017. Total exports have averaged around 875,000 tons the last few months. The total June export figure is above both the three-month moving average (average of April 2018, May 2018 and June 2018) and the 12-month moving average (average of July 2017 through June 2018). Here is a breakdown of flat rolled and plate steel exports:
Cut plate exports increased 5.8 percent from May to 91,598 tons, but were down 15.6 percent compared to levels one year ago.
Exports of coiled plate were 34,135 tons in June, down 2.9 percent month over month, and down 47.8 percent year over year.
Hot rolled steel exports rose 1.8 percent month over month to 63,842 tons, but were down 26.6 percent from June 2017 levels.
Exports of cold rolled products were 49,994 tons in June, down 1.5 percent from May, and down 12.0 percent over the same month last year. This is the highest level seen since October 2017 when 54,398 tons were exported.
Galvanized exports fell 7.6 percent month over month to 117,938 tons. Compared to one year ago, June levels were down 5.1 percent.
Exports of all other metallic coated products came in at 26,240 tons, a 9.4 percent increase from May, and a 1.5 percent increase compared to one year ago.
