Trump signals tariffs on Canada and Mexico will start next week

President Donald Trump told reporters Monday his 25% tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico is on schedule to begin next week.

Last month, Trump agreed to delay 25% tariffs on both Canada and Mexico by a month. Both countries agreed to meet certain demands, including addressing border security and drug trafficking.

Tuesday, March 4, marks the end of that 30-day reprieve.

“We’re on time with the tariffs, and it seems like that’s moving along very rapidly,” the president said at a White House press conference, according to an AP report.

Trump also signaled his reciprocal tariffs are expected to begin as soon as April, the AP reported.

“The tariffs are going forward on time, on schedule,” Trump stated.

Canadian and Mexican officials are in talks with the Trump administration, hoping to stave off the implementation of tariffs. Both countries are also taking internal actions to prepare, including plans for retaliatory tariffs on US products.
