AISI: Raw steel output eases for second week
Written by Brett Linton
February 24, 2025
US steel mills produced an estimated 1,659,000 short tons (st) of raw steel last week, according to data recently released by the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI).
In the week ending Feb. 22, domestic steel output declined by 11,000 st or 0.7% compared to the prior week (Figure 1). Production has eased each of the past two weeks but remains relatively strong in comparison to late-2024 and early-2025 figures.

Domestic production was 0.2% higher than the year-to-date weekly average of 1,655,000 st per week, but 3.2% lower than the same week last year.
Last week’s mill capability utilization rate was 74.5%, down from 75.0% the prior week and 77.7% this time one year ago.
Mill output now totals 12,538,000 st for the year at a capability utilization rate of 74.4%. This is 0.8% lower than the same period of 2024 when 12,637,000 st was produced at a capability utilization rate of 75.4%.
Weekly regional production data and week-over-week (w/w) changes are as follows:
- Northeast – 107,000 st (down 15,000 st w/w)
- Great Lakes – 481,000 st (down 6,000 st)
- Midwest – 238,000 st (down 9,000 st)
- South – 768,000 st (up 18,000 st)
- West – 65,000 st (up 1,000 st)
Editor’s note: The raw steel production tonnage provided in this report is estimated and should be used primarily to assess production trends. The graphic included in this report shows unadjusted weekly data. The monthly AISI “AIS 7” report is available by subscription and provides a more detailed summary of domestic steel production.
