Nucor to build third utility tower plant in Utah

Nucor Corp. is building its third utility structures production facility in Brigham City, Utah.
The Charlotte, N.C.-based steelmaking and manufacturing conglomerate is completing construction of two such production facilities in Decatur, Ala., and Crawfordsville, Ind.
The new $200 million facility in Utah will be located on Nucor’s existing Brigham City campus and is expected to create 200 full-time jobs. The Brigham City location includes a division of Nucor Building Systems and a cold finish bar mill.
“Nucor has a strong presence in the West and locating this new facility in Utah positions us to meet growing demand for utility infrastructure in the region resulting from distributed energy projects, data centers, and population growth,” said Leon Topalian, chair, president and CEO, in a statement.
An expansive electric transmission buildout is planned in the Western US, with local utilities forecasting strong load growth and ramping up capital spending in response, Nucor noted.
Demand for utility infrastructure in the region is being fueled by new energy supply, grid-hardening initiatives and increased load growth from data centers, EV charging stations, and electrification.
The Utah production facility will receive plate and sheet products from Nucor steel mills via rail to meet its raw material needs.
The three tower production facilities will be highly automated and will feature advanced hot-dip galvanizing operations.
Production in Alabama and Indiana is expected in the first and second half of this year, respectively.
