Domestic steel shipments increased in May month over month but have fallen on-year.
Steel mills in the US shipped 7,431,201 short tons (st) in May, up 1% from 7,356,130 st a month earlier, according to the latest figures from American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). Still, that’s down 3.8% from 7,721,633 st in May 2023.
Year-to-date (YTD) shipments through May stood at 36,607,546 st, off 3.3% from 37,860,154 st for the first five months of last year.
Comparing YTD shipments through May vs. the same period a year earlier shows: cold-rolled sheet, up 4%; corrosion-resistant steel, down 2%; and hot-rolled steel, also down 2%.
