USW Says Labor Talks With Stelco To Continue Past June 30 Deadline

The union representing Stelco’s Lake Erie Works in Nanticoke, Ontario, said labor talks would continue past the expiration of the current contract on Thursday.
United Steelworkers (USW) Local 8782 said that the terms of the old contract, which expires on June 30, would remain in effect as negotiations continued.
“Members are required to continue to work their scheduled shifts and perform their regular duties until further notice,” Local 8782 said in update dated Wednesday, June 29.
Canadian flat-rolled steelmaker Stelco operates two mills, Lake Erie Works and Hamilton Works. Lake Erie Works operates a blast furnace and a hot strip mill. Hamilton Works operates a coke plant and coating facilities.
Both Local 1005, which represents Hamilton Works, and Local 8782 have voted to authorize strikes. That does not mean, however, that they will go on strike.
Algoma, another Canadian flat-rolled steelmaker, will see its contract with the USW expire at the end of July. Deals between the USW and US mills don’t expire until Sept. 1.
