U.S. Steel Exports Down in November

The U.S. exported 601,290 tons of steel in November, according to final Census data, a 15 percent decrease from October and down 2 percent from the same month one year ago. This is the lowest level seen since June 2019.
November exports were 3.5 percent below the 2019 average of 623,059 tons, and remain significantly muted compared to recent years as shown in the purple line graph below.
Total November exports were below the three-month moving average (average of September, October and November), and below the 12-month moving average (average of December 2018 through November 2019). Here is a breakdown by product:
Cut plate exports declined 19 percent from October to 64,056 tons, also down 17 percent compared to one year ago.
Exports of coiled plate were 35,666 tons in November, down 10 percent over last month, but up 13 percent year over year.
Hot rolled steel exports fell 54 percent over October to 44,825 tons, and were down 6 percent over November 2018.
Exports of cold rolled products were 39,926 tons in November, down 1 percent from October and down 17 percent over the same month last year.
Galvanized exports rose 1 percent month over month to 113,045 tons. Compared to one year ago, November was up 7 percent.
Exports of all other metallic coated products were 16,340 tons, down 22 percent from October, and down 16 percent compared to one year ago.
