August Heating and Cooling Equipment Shipments Up 4.7 Percent

August heating and cooling equipment shipments came in at 1.85 million units for the month, up 4.7 percent over the same month one year ago, according to data recently released by the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI). This is the second consecutive month that total monthly equipment shipments have increased on a year-over-year basis since March 2019.

Residential and commercial storage water heater shipments rose 8.1 percent year over year to a combined 763,441 units; 741,350 units were shipped for residential use and 22,091 units for commercial use. Prior to July and August, water heater shipments had declined for five consecutive months on a year-over-year basis.

Shipments of warm air furnaces totaled 308,843 units in August, down 3.7 percent compared to the same month last year. This is the second consecutive month warm air furnace shipments have decreased on a year-over-year basis.

Central air conditioners and air-source heat pump shipments rose 5.1 percent over a year ago to 779,923 total units; 499,252 air conditioners and 280,671 heat pumps were shipped.
