Canadian Distributor Flat Rolled Shipments/Inventories in March

Total Canadian steel shipments for all products in March were 421,300 net tons, an increase of 15.2 percent from the month before and an increase of 7.4 percent from March 2017. Total steel inventories at the end of the month stood at 1,165,000 tons, down 0.5 percent from last month and down 2.0 percent from the same month one year ago.
The daily average receipt rate for March was 18,039 tons per day (2 day month), up from 17,945 tons per day in February (20 day month). Total March steel receipts were 414,900 tons, up 56,000 tons over February. According to the MSCI, total steel product inventories stood at 2.8 months at the end of March, down from 3.2 months the month before.
Flat Rolled
Canadian shipments of flat rolled products for the month of March were 224,200 tons, an increase of 17.2 percent from February but a decrease of 2.9 percent from the same month one year ago. Inventories at the end of the month were 734,400 tons, down 1.3 percent from last month but up 2.2 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily receipt rate for March was 9,322 tons per day, down from 9,655 tons per day in February. Total tonnage received was 214,400 tons, up from 193,100 tons the month before. Flat rolled inventories stood at 3.3 months in March, down from 3.9 months of supply in February.
Plate
Canadian shipments for plate products in March were 75,900 tons, an increase of 6.0 percent from the previous month and an increase of 12.5 percent from March 2017. Inventories at the end of the month were 164,600 tons, down 5.3 percent from last month and down 15.1 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for March was 2,896 tons per day, down from 3,365 tons per day the month before. Plate inventories ended the month at 2.2 months, down from 2.4 months the month before.
Pipe and Tube
Canadian shipments for pipe and tube products in the month of March were 57,800 tons, an increase of 15.8 percent from the month before and an increase of 20.4 percent from the same month last year. Inventories at the end of the month were 110,500 tons, up 1.6 percent from last month but down 18.6 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for March was 2,587 tons per day, up from 2,260 tons per day the month before. Total months on hand for pipe and tube inventories stood at 1.9 months, down from 2.2 months in February.

SDI presses on with steel, aluminum investments

SDI posts lower Q3 profit, sees better times in ’25
Steel Dynamics Inc. (SDI) reported a drop in third-quarter profits driven largely by lower flat-rolled steel prices. The Fort Wayne, Ind.-based electric arc furnace (EAF) steelmaker also saw scrap prices slip. That happened because of softer demand from domestic mills taking planned maintenance outages.
