Canadian Distributor Flat Rolled Inventories Jump to 4.7 Months Supply

Canadian shipments for all steel products in the month of December were 302,700 net tons, a decrease of 24.1 percent from the month before and decrease of 19.2 percent from December 2014. Inventories at the end of the month stood at 1,297,000 tons, up 0.8 percent from last month but down 21.7 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for December was 14,919 tons per day (21 day month), down from 16,505 tons per day the month before (20 day month). Total December receipts were 16,800 tons lower than the November figure. According to the MSCI, total steel product inventories stood at 4.3 months at the end of December, up from 3.2 months in November and the highest level since December 2014.
Flat Rolled
Canadian shipments of flat rolled products for the month of December were 149,500 tons, a decrease of 26.9 percent from the month before and a decrease of 17.6 percent from the same month one year ago. Inventories at the end of the month were 707,600 tons, up 2.7 percent from last month but down 25.3 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily receipt rate for December was 7,990 tons per day, up from 7,780 tons per day the month before. Total tonnage received was 167,800 tons, up from 155,600 tons the month before. Flat rolled inventories stood at 4.7 months in December, up from 3.4 months of supply in November and the highest level since December 2014.
Plate
Canadian shipments for plate products in the month of December were 52,900 tons, a decrease of 15.4 percent from the month before and a decrease of 29.3 percent from December 2014. Inventories at the end of the month were 193,100 tons, a decrease of 1.9 percent from last month and a decrease of 34.0 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for December was 2,343 tons per day, down from 2,865 tons per day the month before. Plate inventories ended the month at 3.6 months, up from 3.1 months in November.
Pipe and Tube
Canadian shipments for pipe and tube products in the month of December were 36,400 tons, a decrease of 23.5 percent from the month before and a decrease of 10.9 percent from the same month last year. Inventories at the end of the month were 134,600 tons, up 1.4 percent from last month but down 4.5 percent from the same month one year ago. The daily average receipt rate for December was 1,819 tons per day, down from 2,285 tons per day the month before. Total months on hand for pipe and tube inventories stood at 3.7 months, up from 2.8 months in November.
