January 2015 Raw Steel Production Less Than Prior Year
Written by Brett Linton
March 1, 2015
The American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) recently reported final raw steel production estimates for the month of January 2015. The monthly estimates are different than those produced showing the weekly raw steel production. The monthly estimates are based on 75 percent of the domestic mills reporting vs. 50 percent for the weekly estimates.
Total raw steel production for the month of January was reported to be 8,002,076 net tons with 4,959,152 tons being produced by electric arc furnaces (EAF) and 3,042,922 tons produced by blast furnaces. January raw steel production was reported by the AISI to have been 0.7 percent higher than the previous month. Compared to the first month of 2014, January 2015 production is down 0.9 percent.
The capacity utilization rate for the month of January 2015 was reported to be 76.4 percent, up from 74.6 percent in December 2014 and up from 75.8 percent in January 2014. However, our readers need to be aware that the capacity available to produce steel has been reduced by the AISI.
