Weekly Raw Steel Production Drops

For the week ending January 17, 2015, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) estimated that the U.S. steel industry produced 1,806,000 net tons (NT) of raw steel, a 4.9 percent decrease over the previous week and a 1.0 percent decrease over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 75.1 percent, down from 79.0 percent last week and down from 75.8 percent last year.

Estimated total raw steel produced for 2015 YTD is reported to be 4,501,000 tons, up 1.6 percent from the 4,430,000 tons produced during the same period in 2014. The average capacity utilization rate for 2015 YTD is estimated to be 77.1 percent, up from 75.8 percent for 2014 YTD.

Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: Northeast at 218,000 tons, down 10,000 tons. Great Lakes at 650,000 tons, down 21,000 tons. Midwest at 236,000 tons, down 3,000 tons. South at 607,000 tons, down 61,000 tons. West at 95,000 tons, up 2,000 tons. Total production was 1,806,000 tons, down 93,000 tons.
