Weekly Raw Steel Production Up 2.8 Percent

For the week ending January 4, 2014, the American Iron & Steel Institute (AISI) reported that the U.S. steel industry produced 1,822,000 net tons of raw steel, a 2.8 percent increase over the previous week and a 0.6 percent increase over the same week one year ago. The estimated capacity utilization rate is 76.1 percent, up from 74.0 percent last week and up from 74.4 percent last year.
Week-over-week changes per district are as follows: North East at 207,000 net tons, up 11,000 tons. Great Lakes at 666,000 NT, down 7,000 tons. Midwest at 254,000 NT, up 5,000 tons. South at 607,000 NT, up 38,000 tons. West at 88,000 NT, up 2,000 tons. Total production was 1,822,000 NT, up 49,000 tons.
