Production slows at USS Edgar Thomson Plant after BOF house incident

Written by Laura Miller

An incident over the weekend slowed production at U.S. Steel’s Edgar Thomson Plant near Pittsburgh.

The building in Braddock, Pa. that houses the basic oxygen process equipment suffered “minor damage” on Sunday, Feb. 23, according to a USS spokesperson.

“Production slowed briefly so temporary repairs could be made and final repairs are in the process of being completed,” the spokesperson told SMU in an email Thursday afternoon.

The incident did not cause any injuries or have any environmental impact, the spokesperson added.

The basic oxygen furnace (BOF) at Edgar Thomson has an annual steelmaking capacity of 2.9 million short tons, or a daily capacity of ~7,945 st, according to SMU’s BOF capacity table.

The Edgar Thomson Plant is a part of U.S. Steel’s Mon Valley Works, located 10 miles southeast of the flat-rolled steelmaker’s headquarters in Pittsburgh.

Mon Valley Works comprises the Clairton coke plant, Edgar Thomson blast furnace and BOF steelmaking operations, the Irvin rolling plant, and the Fairless galvanizing plant.
