Written by David Schollaert
January 16, 2025
Alan Kestenbaum, the founder of Bedrock Industries and the former CEO of Stelco, will be the featured speaker on the next SMU Community Chat.
The webinar will be on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 11 am ET. It’s free to attend. You can register here.
We’ll look at Stelco’s recent sale to Cleveland-Cliffs and what made the low-cost, integrated Canadian steelmaker such an attractive asset. We’ll also catch up with Alan about what he’s been up to since – including if there are any new projects in the works.
Why should you listen?
Alan is a metals industry veteran, with a proven global M&A track record, and a knack for reviving businesses and driving success.
You’ll get insights into what the North American trade landscape might look like under Trump 2.0. We’ll also discuss what Kestenbaum’s learned from his efforts to return Stelco to its status as an iconic Canadian steelmaker.
We’ll in addition talk about M&A more broadly speaking, consolidation across the North American steel market, and Kestenbaum’s experience in other industries – including silicon and steelmaking raw materials.
So join us on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at 11 am ET (10 am CT) for what is sure to be a lively discussion. We’ll take your questions too. So make sure to bring some good ones to the Q&A!
Editor’s note: You can see all of our Community Chats – including a good one from Jan. 15 with SMA president Philip K. Bell – here.

Domestic, offshore CRC prices edge up
The price spread between US-produced cold-rolled (CR) coil and offshore products tightened slightly in the week ended Jan. 24, as imports edged higher than US product. Domestic CR coil tags were up week on week (w/w), a trend mirrored in offshore markets at a slightly sharper clip. The result? The US premium over imports shrank […]
