Domestic steel shipments in October declined from the previous month and from a year earlier.
US mills shipped 6,987,092 short tons (st) of steel in October. That’s off 1.4% from 7,083,141 st in September, according to the latest data from the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI). It’s also a 4.9% decline from 7,346,373 st in October 2023.
Year-to-date (YTD) shipments through October totaled 72,283,207 st, a 3.7% decrease from 75,080,374 st in the same period a year earlier.
Comparing YTD shipments for the first 10 months of 2024 vs. 2023 shows cold-rolled sheet, up 4%; corrosion-resistant steel, unchanged; and hot-rolled steel, down 6%.
