Heating and cooling equipment shipments improved in January: AHRI

Domestic shipments of heating and cooling equipment were up marginally in January, according to the latest data released from the Air Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).
Shipments were up 0.2% month on month (m/m) but down 10% year on year (y/y) to 1481,125 units in January. On a 12-month moving average (12MMA) basis, shipments were down 0.8% to 1,744,138 units vs. 1,758,400 units the prior month.

The chart below shows the annual rate of change in total heating and cooling shipments on a three-month moving average (3MMA) basis. It shows January shipments as being down 9%.

January shipments of residential and commercial storage water heaters fell 3% m/m to a combined 783,035 units. Shipments decreased 0.1% y/y from 784,174 units.

Shipments of central air conditioners and air-source heat pumps were down 14% m/m and 21% y/y to 479,374 units. A total of 248,035 AC units and 231,339 heat pump units were shipped in January.

The year-to-date combined total of all products through November stood at 45,774,147 units, up 84% from a year earlier.

The US Commerce Department on Friday released preliminary anti-dumping margins in a trade case targeted imports of coated flat-rolled steel from 10 countries.
