A contract worker suffered a fatality on Friday, Nov. 24, at Nucor Steel Indiana’s Crawfordsville sheet mill.
A spokeswoman for Nucor told SMU that “an incident occurred Friday at our Nucor Steel Crawfordsville sheet mill in the slag yard area of the facility operated by a contractor, Edw. C. Levy Co.”
She said the incident involved a Levy contract employee.
“Our sympathies go out to the family and friends of this contractor and others impacted by this tragedy. We are deeply saddened by this event,” the spokeswoman added.
She noted the mill suspended operations immediately following the incident.
“Operations in the slag area remain suspended as we work with Edw. C. Levy Co., and Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) officials to investigate the cause of the incident,” the spokeswoman said.
She said other areas of Nucor Steel Crawfordsville have resumed operations.
A request for comment from Edw. C. Levy Co. was not returned by time of publication.
Nucor Steel Indiana was Nucor’s first steel sheet mill, starting operations in 1989.
