Ford Calls for Investment in Clean Aluminum

Written by Becca Moczygemba

As steel production in the US continues to get cleaner, aluminum end users are calling on the government to invest in American-made, clean aluminum.

On Sept. 28, 14 companies sent a letter to US Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Jennifer Granholm stating that the US needs “a reliable supply of domestically-produced, clean aluminum.”

The letter highlighted that investments from the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) can help to expand and secure an affordable supply of clean energy so that “American-made primary aluminum doesn’t disappear.”

Ford Motor Company, one of the letter’s signers, released its own statement.

The automaker noted its commitment to obtaining carbon neutrality across its vehicles, operations, and supply chain by 2050. Part of Ford’s approach to achieving that goal is sourcing domestically produced, lower-carbon primary aluminum, the statement said.

Cynthia Williams, global director of sustainability, homologation and compliance at Ford, stated that the IRA “presents a powerful opportunity for the Department of Energy to prioritize American-made, clean sources of aluminum.”

Williams noted that domestically sourced aluminum makes more sustainable options available to companies like Ford. “It’s going to take all of us – manufacturers, suppliers, energy providers and government – working together to build a better future that’s not just good for business, but also for people and the planet,” she said.

In addition to Ford, other signers of the letter were General Motors, Alternate Energy Technologies, Ball Corporation, Golden Aluminum, Oakland United Beerworks, Olipop, PepsiCo, Rivian, Shacksbury Cider, Sierra Nevada Brewing, SunEarth, SunPower, and TS Conductor.
