USS to Offer Environmental Data on Big River Steel Products
July 14, 2023
U.S. Steel has announced environmental product declarations (EPDs) across three flat-rolled steel coil products melted at its Big River Steel Works in Osceola, Ark.
The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker said Friday the offerings include hot-rolled, cold-rolled, and corrosion-resistant flat-rolled products from Big River Steel.
“The EPDs provide quantifiable, independent, and audited environmental data on these core products,” U.S. Steel said in a press release.
The disclosures are valid for five years. They give customers objective information about the “lifecycle impacts and emissions of steel products, enabling them to select more sustainable products for their manufacturing,” the company said.
U.S. Steel noted that these EPDs are a step forward in measuring its products’ carbon footprint. They are certified and audited by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and include information about a product’s potential impact on global warming, smog creation, and water usage,
“We are thrilled to have secured EPDs on our three major flat-rolled steel coil products, representing all products melted at Big River Steel Works,” U.S. Steel chief commercial officer Kenneth Jaycox said in the release.
The development helps customers seeking more information about their supply chain’s environmental impact. “Presenting transparent and data-backed validation of our products empowers our customers to make more informed and sustainable decisions,” Jaycox said.
Editor’s note: Jaycox will be speaking at SMU’s Steel Summit conference on Aug. 21-23 at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta. The agenda is here. You can register here.
