SMU Steel Summit 2023 Approaching Fast!
Written by David Schollaert
July 3, 2023
We’re now less than two months away from the kickoff of SMU’s 2023 Steel Summit Conference, which runs from Monday-Wednesday, Aug. 21-23, in Atlanta.
Registrations for Steel Summit are flooding in, with roughly 820 people already registered, and hotel availability dwindling fast. Register here.
The hotels within walking distance of the event – Georgia International Convention Center (GICC) – are sold out.
The GICC is a massive conference center on the doorstep of the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. A tram brings you directly from the airport to the event for a no-hassle (and FREE!) means of transportation.
There are still plenty of hotels available near Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson airport that are roughly a mile from the GICC. They include: the Atlanta Airport Marriott, the Westin Atlanta Airport, and the Courtyard Atlanta South/Sullivan Road.
Also, there are tons of options if you’d rather stay downtown. Among them are the Glenn Hotel (Autograph Collection), the AC Hotel Atlanta Downtown, and Residence Inn Atlanta Downtown.
Every year the event gets bigger and better, with attendance growing from 434 attendees in 2016 to nearly 1,300 in 2022, and we’re poised to shatter last year’s attendee number. It’s the biggest flat-rolled steel event in the US and the full agenda is just about complete.
More than 480 companies in the North American steel market attend. It’s the ‘Can’t-Miss’ steel event of 2023 and a perfect opportunity to meet individuals from across the country, Mexico, and Canada, and meet new contacts. It’s also a good place to educate yourself on the latest developments in steel and in the broader economy.
The SMU Steel Summit Conference, now in its 14th year, is known for being the best conference to get solid economic information, quality price forecasts, information about decarbonization, electric vehicles, new supply coming on-stream, industry segment forecasts, and much, much more. We promise you will be entertained. The conference attracts company presidents and CEOs, vice presidents of sales and purchasing, chief operating officers, CFOs, support staff, and young up-and-coming executives associated with manufacturing, steel distribution, steel mills, trading, toll processors, and suppliers to those industries.
Here is a list of companies who just booked their spot at this year’s show. You can click here for a more complete list including all registered companies. Do you see your company’s name? Those with an asterisk next to their name are sending more than one person to the event:

Nucor said it is seeking $740 per short ton (st) for hot-rolled (HR) coil this week, up $20/st from last week. USS, meanwhile, is shooting for up $30/st for sheet products in general. (USS did not announce a target price for HR.)

We all know the American news cycle moves pretty fast. Viral today, cached tomorrow. So it is with the US presidential election on Tuesday, Nov. 5. People have election fatigue. They've moved on to other things like planning holiday parties, debating Super Bowl hopefuls, or even starting to look forward to our Tampa Steel Conference in February.
Final Thoughts
U.S. Steel plans to increase sheet prices by at least $30 per short ton (st). That's something we haven't seen for a while.
Final Thoughts
SMU's hot-rolled (HR) coil price slipped this week to $685 per short ton (st) on average. We also adjusted our sheet momentum indicators to lower for the first time since July.

When a mapmaker constructs a map, it’s always to the contours of the land. Or sea. That is, the mapmaker doesn’t say, “Look, these rocks really don’t belong here, so I’m not going to include them in the harbor map.” Uncharted rocks, sink ships (along with loose lips).
