Nucor Steel Brandenburg Casts First Slab on New Caster

March 30, 2023
Nucor’s new plate mill in Brandenburg, Ky., reached another milestone earlier this month with the casting of its first slab on its new continuous caster.
The SMS group, supplier of the single-strand caster, announced the milestone was reached on March 8.
The caster, one of the largest in the world with an annual production capacity of 1.6 million tons, can produce ultra-wide and thick slabs, allowing Nucor to supply the steel needed for offshore wind towers. The Brandenburg mill will be one of the few mills in the US able to produce at scale the heavy-gauge plate needed for those projects.
‟SMS group and Nucor are a good team and we are proud that one of the largest continuous casters has now started production. The caster is of crucial importance for the success of our new plate mill. In this way, we can successfully contribute to our government’s plan to build a total of 30 GW of offshore capacity by 2030,” commented Johnny Jacobs, vice president and general manager at Nucor Brandenburg.
To supply the offshore wind energy sector, Nucor introduced its new sustainable, heavy-gauge steel plate “Elcyon” earlier this year.
The new $1.7-billion Brandenburg mill rolled its first plate in December and shipped its first customer order in January.
