SMA Taps CMC's Garrison for Chairman
February 3, 2023
The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) has announced the election of Ty Garrison as chairman.
Garrison is senior vice president of operations at Irving, Texas-based Commercial Metals Co. (CMC). He leads operations and commercial teams in the US and Poland, along with supply chain and engineering functions. Garrison joined the CMC commercial team in 2000 and was appointed to his current role in 2021.
“Ty has leadership qualities that help organizations grow their strengths, capitalize on opportunities, and overcome challenges, all while putting people first and focusing on solutions,” SMA president Philip K. Bell said in a statement.
Garrison noted that it was “an exciting time to be the chairman of SMA.”
“Global trade deals and standards for sustainable steel are being negotiated around the world, and we must make sure that steel produced by SMA members — some of the cleanest steel in the world — continues to lead the conversation,” he said.
Joining Garrison on the SMA executive committee are past chairman, Mark Millett, chairman and CEO of Steel Dynamics Inc.; the treasurer, Jim Hrusovsky, CEO, Alton Steel; and five at-large members: Greg Murphy, executive vice president, business services, and general counsel, Nucor Corp.; Chuck Schmitt, president, SSAB Americas; Eric Shuster, president, Vallourec Star LP; Ed Goettl, chief revenue officer, Optimus Steel; and Matt Ruckwardt, vice president, chief of steel operations and business performance, Cascade Steel, a Schnitzer Steel Industries company.
