Minnesota is joining forces with North Dakota, Montana and Wisconsin to develop a multistate hydrogen hub. The announcement, made on Oct. 5, stated the Heartland Hydrogen Hub will be a regional clean energy hub that spans across the northern states.
Under a memorandum of understanding signed by the governors of all four states, a proposal will be drawn up to obtain federal funding from the US government. The Department of Energy is currently accepting applications, with concept papers due Nov. 7 and applications due by April 7, 2023, and will select six to 10 hubs, with future opportunities for others to receive funding. Establishing an array of hydrogen hubs will expand the clean energy economy in participating states, create jobs, and contribute to achieving net-zero emissions.
“Minnesota is working to expand our clean energy economy and meet the changing needs of industries across our state with innovative solutions,” stated Governor Walz.
The Heartland Hydrogen Hub will blend projects from multiple energy sources and partners. An agreement among the states supports initiatives to identify collaboration opportunities with tribal nations to contribute to the framework of the hub. Additionally, the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) at the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks will pilot the development of the application. The National Center for Hydrogen Technology is housed at the EERC and is known for its development, testing, and integration of technology that utilizes hydrogen.
