Hot Commissioning Begins on USS Gary Works' Pig Iron Caster
December 13, 2022
US Steel said hot commissioning is underway, and the first small batch of pig iron was cast at its Gary Works in northwest Indiana.
The Pittsburgh-based steelmaker said it has cast several full ladles of hot iron and produced over 1,000 tons of pig iron.
This occurred months ahead of schedule, while maintaining a perfect safety record since the start of construction in March 2022, the company said. US Steel celebrated the start of the $60 million, 500,000-tons-per-year caster in April.
“Congratulations to the entire team at Gary Works on achieving this latest milestone,” Scott Buckiso, senior vice president and chief manufacturing officer of the North American flat-rolled segment, said in a statement.
Gary Works has not reached full production of pig iron yet, but daily equipment and process testing ensure that progress toward production continues, US Steel said.
The company added that Gary Works remains on track to begin full production of pig iron in the first half of 2023.
