With a total investment of $150 million Canadian (US$109.9 million), Tenaris recently consolidated its seamless and welded pipe manufacturing operations in Canada into one location in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, to better serve the country’s energy sector.
An inauguration ceremony with company executives, customers, employees, and government officials was held on Sept. 27 to mark the occasion.
Tenaris’ investments included a new electric resistance weld (ERW) pipe manufacturing line and a new premium threading line, allowing it to offer new grades of welded steel pipe and extended sizes. Improvements to safety, automation, and digitalization were also made to the existing operations.
The new pipe manufacturing hub has annual production capacity of 220,000 tons of ERW and 400,000 tons of seamless OCTG. The hub will be supported by a Tenaris threading facility in Nisku, Alberta, and pipe service centers in Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Newfoundland and Labrador.
The investment by Tenaris was supported with contributions from Canada’s federal, provincial, and municipal governments.
“Canadian steel pipe producers are an incredibly important part of the global circular economy and are leaders in best-practices and environmental stewardship. By investing in this project with Tenaris, we will help strengthen the competitiveness of the steel sector, advance sustainable technology, and expand production capabilities to maintain Canada’s position in the global market,” said Canadian International Trade Minister Mary Ng.
Tenaris now employees more than 600 workers in Sault Ste. Marie. The company’s Canadian headquarters remain in Calgary, Alberta.
“Canada has the resources, and we are pleased to invest with our people to serve them. I look forward to celebrating future milestones as our journey in Canada continues,” Tenaris chairman and CEO Paolo Rocca said at the event.
Tenaris is a pipe producer headquartered in Luxembourg with operations in 16 countries around the world.
