Steel Market Update is hosting several conferences and events over the balance of this year that you won’t want to miss. This includes our flagship conference, the SMU Steel Summit Conference which will be held at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta on Aug. 22-24. We are also conducting several workshops that may be of interest to you or to those just entering the steel and manufacturing industries. These include several Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals Workshops, Introduction to Steel Hedging (used to be called Hedging 101), and our Advanced Steel Hedging: Strategies & Execution Workshop (used to be called Hedging 201).
SMU Steel Summit Conference Update: Aug. 22-24
We have moved from one Black Swan event to another, and the impacts are being felt far and wide and in varying ways by the steel and manufacturing communities. The SMU Steel Summit Conference is a little more than five months away. The world is rapidly changing, and those changes will need to be discussed and put into perspective as buyers and sellers of steel grapple with what their business landscape will look like at the back end of this year and into 2023.
This year’s conference will have some familiar faces as steel industry CEOs, analysts, economists and consultants discuss market trends and forecast steel prices. We will also focus on the forces driving commodity and steel prices both now and into the future. The impacts of COVID, the war in Ukraine, sanctions, decarbonization and mill costs will all be discussed and debated at this year’s conference.
As an extra bonus for the 1,200 executives expected to attend this year will be an opportunity to network with hundreds of decisionmakers from manufacturing, steel distribution, steel mills, trading companies, toll processors and dozens of companies who support those industries.

SMU Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals Workshop (April 19-20, July 19-20)
Our next Steel 101 workshop will be in-person as we travel to Memphis, Tenn., and tour the Nucor Hickman facility in Arkansas. This will be our first “live” Steel 101 workshop in more than two years. We know there is pent-up demand from those who are itching to meet our extremely qualified instructors, have a chance to network with others interested and involved in the greater steel community, and to tour a Nucor mill that has recently completed new equipment upgrades.
You can learn more about our agenda, instructors, the hotel where the workshop will be conducted, as well as the mill we will be visiting, costs to attend, and how to register by clicking here or going to https://events.crugroup.com/steel101/about-steel-101
Over the past two years, despite the pandemic, we have learned there was a pent-up demand for quality steel training programs. With the help of our parent company, CRU, we were able to produce a virtual steel training platform that has been well accepted by the greater steel community. Our virtual platform allows attendees to remain at home or in their offices yet have an opportunity to interact with the instructors and other attendees. Our next virtual Steel 101 workshop will be held on July 19-20. You can learn more about the virtual agenda, instructors, the platform, costs to attend, and how to register by clicking here or going to https://events.crugroup.com/steel101/about-steel-101
Introduction to Steel Hedging (April 26-27)
Having just completed our first in-person Introduction to Steel Hedging Workshop in Tampa in February, our next workshop will be virtual and will be conducted over two half days on April 26 & 27.
As you navigate what has been an incredibly volatile price environment that no one could have predicted, it is important to understand there are ways to deal with the volatility through hedging. Over the past couple of years, we have been working with Spencer Johnson of StoneX Financial – FCM Division, the CME Group, and CRU (which produces the HRC numbers used by the CME) in order to produce a quality educational experience on the subject of hedging steel.
There are various reasons for hedging including protecting margins, protecting inventory values, and offering long-term pricing. Each of these will be discussed during this course.
You can learn more about the agenda, our instructor, costs to attend, and how to register by clicking here or going to https://events.crugroup.com/steel101/about-steel-hedging-101
There will be other workshops offered on hedging later this year. This includes more Introduction to Steel Hedging Workshops (both live and virtual) as well as our Advanced Steel Hedging Workshop: Strategies and Execution. New workshop dates will be advised soon. You can learn more about all the workshops SMU offers by going to https://events.crugroup.com/steel101/home
