Nucor Selects Gallatin as Site for New Tube Mill

Written by Sandy Williams

Nucor plans to build a new tube mill at Nucor Steel Gallatin in Kentucky. The tube mill will have the capacity to produce approximately 250,000 tons of hollow structural section (HSS) steel tubing, mechanical steel tubing and galvanized solar torque tube. The mill will be advantageously near to growing solar markets and the largest consuming regions for HSS steel tubing, the company said.

“With our recent investments to expand capacity at Nucor Steel Gallatin and add a galvanizing line, our Gallatin campus is an ideal location to build our new tube mill,” said Leon Topalian, president and chief executive officer of Nucor Corp. “The new tube mill will allow us to better serve our customers in the construction, infrastructure and renewable energy markets.”

The $164 million project is expected to be operational by mid-2023 and create more than 70 new full-time jobs.

Nucor’s Tubular Products Group currently consists of eight facilities located in close proximity to Nucor’s sheet mills. The group has an annual capacity of 1.365 million tons and produces HSS steel tubing, mechanical steel tubing, piling, sprinkler pipe, galvanized tube, heat-treated tubing and electrical conduit.
