2021 SMU Steel Summit Conference Update

Written by John Packard

Registrations for the 2021 SMU Steel Summit Conference have topped 200 and counting. We continue to work toward having a live in-person conference in Atlanta on Aug. 23-25. We are heartened to hear President Biden speak to having enough vaccine to inoculate the entire U.S. population by the end of May. If true, that gives us three-month leeway to host a safe conference (we are recommending that anyone attending be vaccinated prior to coming).

The SMU and CRU Events teams are working diligently to put together a tremendous conference with quality speakers and content.

Steel SummitHere are some of the key topics we will be discussing at this year’s conference: Steel mill CEOs will speak about new capacity, competitiveness, immediate priorities, infrastructure, and long-term focus on clean steels. Steel price volatility will be discussed from various perspectives – steel mill, manufacturing company, distributors, analysts, economists, and forecasts for future steel prices.

  • Main steel-using segment forecasts (automotive, construction, energy, etc.).
  • International and domestic focused economic forecasts and what your company should be doing to remain competitive.
  • Steel input costs (such as scrap) and their impact on steel pricing.
  • Shifting trade flows and the impact foreign steel will (or will not) have on steel prices and supply.
  • How the Biden administration policies will impact the steel and manufacturing communities.
  • Special topics such as infrastructure and the decarbonization of the industry.
  • We also will recognize young talent within the industry with our Youth Leadership Award.

We have the following industry leaders committed to speak in Atlanta, with many more to come:

  • Lourenco Goncalves, Chairman, President & CEO, Cleveland-Cliffs
  • Mark Millett, President & CEO, Steel Dynamics
  • Phil Bell, President, Steel Manufacturers Association
  • Michael Smerconish, Author, Radio & TV commentator, CNN
  • Alan Beaulieu, Principle & Managing Director, ITR Economics
  • Lewis Leibowitz, Trade Attorney, The Law Offices of Lewis E. Leibowitz
  • Timna Tanners, Metals & Mining Analyst, Bank of America
  • John Packard, President & CEO, Steel Market Update

The following companies have registered executives to attend the conference over the last couple of days. Those with an asterisk (*) will be sending more than one person to the conference: B&W*, BMO Harris Bank N.A.*, California Steel Industries, Deutsche Bank*, Leeco Steel LLC*, Magic Coil Products*, Ohio Steel Sheet & Plate, Priefert Manufacturing*, Ternium USA*
