Nucor Trinidad DRI Plant Closed Due to Coronavirus

Nucor’s direct reduced iron (DRI) facility in Trinidad has been shut down by the government in its effort to control COVID-19 infections.
“Our Nu-Iron direct reduced iron plant has been temporarily taken down in order to comply with government orders to combat the spread of COVID-19 in Trinidad,’ said Nucor spokesperson Katherine Miller. “With the exception of a security crew on site, we have sent all teammates home as a precautionary measure to ensure their health and wellness.”
DRI from Nucor’s Trinidad and Louisiana plants is combined with scrap for use in the company’s electric arc furnaces. “Our steel mills that use DRI as feedstock continue to operate utilizing existing DRI inventory and are not affected by the outage,” said Miller.
