ArcelorMittal Coke Battery Repairs on Track

ArcelorMittal’s $19.25 million project to repair its No. 2 coke battery at Burns Harbor is on track to meet its 2022 completion date, reports the company.
The coke battery’s last rebuild was in 1994. Work on the five-year project began last year. The company continues to produce coke at the facility, which has two six-meter coke batteries, as it works on three ovens at a time, primarily replacing brickwork in the roofs. So far, 18 of No. 2’s 82 ovens have been repaired. The batteries are designed to produce about 950,000 tons of coke per year to supply Burns Harbor’s two blast furnaces.
“The work will allow the No. 2 battery to continue meeting the coke demands of ArcelorMittal USA, including transfers to Indiana Harbor,” said Nagendra Singh, process manager for the coke plant, in a recent blog.
The repairs will not increase the mill’s production capacity for coke or steel. “This project is another example of how we are investing in our operations to improve efficiency and environmental performance,” added a company spokesperson.
