The Association of Steel Distributors has selected Andrew (Andy) Gross as its 2018 Steel Executive of the Year.
Gross is president and CEO of Alliance Steel, Bedford Park, Ill. A long-time member of ASD, Gross has served as president and chairman of the service center trade group since 2017. He is also a member of the Fabricators & Manufacturers Association board. ASD is an affiliate of FMA.
“Andy is a true leader in our business, and a well-respected mentor within the industry. He has tirelessly served the ASD for many years, and truly represents the full essence of a Steel Executive of the Year Award winner,” said ASD Vice Chair Michael Sawyer, vice president and co-owner of Universal Metals, Toledo, Ohio.
“Andy’s entrepreneurial spirit is a real inspiration to many people, and his long-standing commitment to the steel industry is exemplary,” added Lisa Goldenberg, president of Delaware Steel Company of Pennsylvania and a former recipient of the award.
Gross began his career in the steel business working for his father, Al Gross, at Essak Steel in the late 1970s. Learning the steel business from the ground up, Gross went on to purchase Alliance Steel Corp. in 1997. The company opened its headquarters in Bedford Park in 1999 and later added sales and service offices in Atlanta and Memphis. The company has continued to expand and is in the process of relocating its headquarters to a larger facility in Gary, Ind.
Since 1956, ASD has bestowed its Executive of the Year Award to recognize individuals who have made lasting contributions to the steel distribution industry. “I am extremely honored to be chosen for this prestigious award,” Gross said. “I have been associated with the steel industry for 40 years and look forward to an active year of growth in both our industry and ASD.”
Gross will be honored at a special celebration during the FMA Annual Meeting on March 5 in Nashville. To learn more, visit fmanet.org/asddinner.
