In an article last week, I overstated the amount of quota Brazil had for Galvalume. One of the other traders/mills was nice enough to provide me the accurate data. The yearly quota on AZ is 49,974.44 metric tons.
The other flat rolled and plate product quotas out of Brazil are as follows:
Hot rolled = 108,453.55 metric tons. As of late 3Q, none of the quota had been used (remember they have AD/CVD duties).
Hot rolled plate in coils = 21,645 metric tons. As of late 3Q, none of the quota had been used.
Cold rolled sheet = 51,717.23 metric tons. As of late 3Q, none of the quota had been used.
Plate in cut lengths = 9,116.70 metric tons. As of late 3Q, none of the quota had been used.
Hot dipped galvanized = 179,284.35 metric tons. As of late 3Q, 40,985.54 metric tons had been used (23 percent of the total).
Galvalume = 49,974.44 metric tons. As of late 3Q, 28,910.55 metric tons had been used (58 percent of the total).
Oil country pipe and tube goods = 56,857.55 metric tons. As of late 3Q, 57,768 metric tons had been used (102 percent of the total).
Line pipe not exceeding 406.4 mm in OD = 21,382.36 metric tons. As of late 3Q, 100 percent of the annual quota had been used.
I will try to update this information through the end of 3Q and show what is available for 4Q as soon as possible.
I believe we had another registration for our next Steel 101 workshop over the weekend. This means we are literally only a few seats from being sold out. The dates on this workshop are Dec. 11-12 in Toledo, Ohio. We will tour the North Star BlueScope steel mill as part of our program. You can find more details on our website: www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/Events/Steel101 and you are welcome to contact our office should you have any questions. I will be available through this Wednesday and can be reached at 800-432-3475.
As always, your business is truly appreciated by all of us here at Steel Market Update.

The US steel market has whipsawed upward on the prospect of expanded Section 232 tariffs of 25% being applied to imported steel - including downstream goods - on March 12. It seems pretty clear that domestic steel mills have the ear of the Trump administration when it comes to Section 232. The result? The much-anticipated Trump bump has finally arrived - and then some.

Some of you have told me that the current market feels about as crazy as early 2021 when demand snapped back after the initial outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Others have said it might be more like late February/early March 2022, when Russia launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine – and, in the process, caused […]

To say we’ve entered a “Brave New World” since Jan. 20 might be an exaggeration, but we’ve definitely entered a different one.

Final Thoughts
I think it’s fair to say that the last few weeks – and last week especially – have been among the most intense for any of us covering steel (or aluminum).
