If your company is interested in a sponsor spot at the 2019 SMU Steel Summit Conference in Atlanta (Aug. 26-28), please contact Jill Waldman at Jill@SteelMarketUpdate.com so we can get you our sponsorship package as soon as it is ready. Those companies that were sponsors this year will have first crack at committing for 2019. Please let Jill know your intentions.
My crazy schedule continues as I will be out of the office on Friday of this week. I will be in Minnesota on Monday (Sept. 24), then flying to Pittsburgh that evening where I will visit the CRU USA offices for a couple of days, returning to my office on Thursday of next week. After two full days in the office, I leave for Chicago where I will attend the CRU North American Steel Conference. The dates for the conference are Oct. 1-3 and it will be held at the Swissotel in downtown Chicago. If you would like to learn more, you can do so by clicking here.
But wait, my travel schedule does not end there. The following week I will be in Newport, Ky., to speak to the Association of Women in the Metal Industries (AWMI). I got a text from Joel Mazur who told me he will be there (heck, if he can make it, then maybe you can too!). You can find more information about the AWMI Oct. 18 event by clicking here.
The week of Oct. 22, I will be in Houston for the IPANA and RIPA conference on Oct. 24-26.
Then I come back and crash for a month.
We have already registered 50 percent of the available slots for the Dec. 11-12 Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals Workshop. I am expecting another full class with service centers, manufacturing companies, steel mills and others associated with the industry in attendance. You can find more details about the conference on our website: www.SteelMarketUpdate.com/Events/Steel101. We have added a new instructor for this conference, Roger Walburn, who is the General Manager of Specialty Products for NLMK USA. Roger has a metallurgical engineering background and has exposure to the educational side, having taught courses at Carnegie Mellon, NLMK, in customers’ facilities and at various steel industry training events.
I want to welcome our newest members to Steel Market Update. I encourage you to reach out and ask questions or share comments and suggestions. I can be reached at John@SteelMarketUpdate.com and I will do my best to get you an answer or response as soon as possible. Many of our articles begin as questions from our members, so most likely if you are thinking about it, others in the industry are, as well.
As always, your business is truly appreciated by all of us here at Steel Market Update.

It's that time of year again. You know, that time when people wonder if those things are drones in New Jersey or if the aliens are ready to come onto the stage just in time for Inauguration Day. What will that do for steel price volatility? In any case, the SMU team finds itself in Pittsburgh this week.

The Community Chat last Wednesday with ITR economist Taylor St. Germain is worth listening to if you couldn’t tune in live. You can find the replay and Taylor’s slide deck here. You can also find SMU reporter Stephanie Ritenbaugh’s writeup of the webinar here. Taylor is Alan Beaulieu’s protégé at ITR. Many of you know Alan from his talks at SMU Steel Summit. I found Taylor’s analysis just as insightful as Alan’s.

Cracks have formed in what has been presented as the Biden administration’s united front against Nippon Steel’s play for U.S. Steel. A report from the Financial Times said parts of the administration are at odds on the deal.
