Over the past few days, all of the domestic plate mills have announced a $40 per ton ($2.00/cwt) price increase on plate products.
We have seen announcements out of the Nucor Plate Group, ArcelorMittal USA commercial plate group, Evraz and SSAB. SSAB was the last to announce with their letter dated Nov. 16, 2017.
In the SSAB announcement, they told their customers: “Please be advised SSAB Americas is increasing transaction prices by a minimum of $40 per ton effective immediately for all new non-contract orders. This increase is in addition to our increase announced on Nov. 6. The increase will apply for As-Rolled Mill Plate, Cut-To-Length Plate >72”, Hot Rolled Coils >72”, as well as Normalized and Quenched & Tempered Plate. All extras will be applied as published. We also reserve the right to re-quote any open offers that are not confirmed with an SSAB order acknowledgement. SSAB continues to monitor market conditions in order to better realize the value of our products.”
The plate announcements come at a time when the various steel indexes are showing plate spot pricing as being essentially the same as hot rolled. Normally plate products carry at least a $100 per ton premium over hot rolled.
