Registration is now open for Steel Market Update’s next Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals workshop. This steel training workshop will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in Merrillville, Ind., located just outside of Chicago. As part of this workshop, we will be touring the NLMK USA Portage, Ind., steel mill.
Our Steel 101 workshop is dedicated to helping new people coming into the steel and manufacturing industries learn how steel is made, rolled to either sheet (flat rolled) or long products (bars, angles, beams, rod, etc.) and sold. We also discuss some of the market factors to watch, both domestically and internationally, as your company looks to determine where prices will go from here (or how we got here in the first case).
Besides new employees, our workshop also attracts those who have been in the industry for years but may be changing positions or just want a refresher course. We have had students ranging from CEOs to customer service and operations personnel, as well as many sales and purchasing people. Our workshop also attracts supporting industries such as railroads, trucking companies, toll processors, raw material suppliers, banks, financial analysts and investors.
We have a tremendous group of instructors in John Eckstein, Peter Wright, Steve Murphy, Mario Briccetti, Steve Painter and SMU CEO and Publisher John Packard.
The dates for the conference are March 28-29 (Wednesday/Thursday), 2018.
Hilton Garden Inn – Merrillville
7775 Mississippi St.
Merrillville, IN
The Steel Market Update room rate is $139 per night, plus applicable taxes.
Merrillville is a 67-minute drive from O’Hare and a 58-minute drive from Midway airports. The hotel is 20 minutes from the NLMK Portage steel mill.
The close proximity will allow us to potentially add a second tour to the afternoon of the first day. Two service centers have offered to allow us to tour their facilities, so we will be making a decision on those offers soon.
This will be our third visit to the NLMK Portage facility. We want to thank NLMK USA CEO Robert Miller, Executive Vice President James Banker, Jr., and all of the teammates at NLMK Portage for their kind hospitality.
More information can be found on the Steel Market Update website: www.SteelMarketUpdate.com or you are welcome to contact our offices with questions (800-432-3475) or to register (772-932-7538).

SMU Week in Review: September 1-5
Here are highlights of what’s happened this past week and a few upcoming things to keep an eye on.

HR Futures: Market finds footing on supply-side mechanics
As Labor Day marks the transition into fall, the steel market enters September with a similar sense of change. Supply-side fundamentals are beginning to show signs of restraint: imports are limited, outages loom, and production is capped, setting the stage for a market that feels steady on the surface but still unsettled underneath.
