The next Steel 101 steel training workshop will be held in Mobile, Ala., and will include a tour of the SSAB Mobile minimill. Registration is open, and the workshop currently is almost half full.
“SMU Steel 101 is a great learning tool for anyone working in the steel industry in any position. I wish I had this class 10 years ago.” Joann Pirko, Magic Coil Products (attended Fort Wayne/SDI workshop in October 2017)
Steel Market Update (SMU) was recently asked what differentiates our Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals workshop from the competition?
First, the instructors associated with our Steel 101 workshop are second to none. Each has been an active participant for as few as 10 years to as many as 50 years in the steel industry. They understand the subject matter being passed on to our attendees. They enjoy interacting and sharing information with the attendees and they are available for consult after the class is over should questions arise in the office or the field.
“This was a very informative workshop for any organization related to steel. We were in good hands with very knowledgeable, friendly instructors who are willing to take time to explain steel in detail, no matter how simple or complicated questions may be. I highly recommend!” Terrence Taylor, Goodman Manufacturing (attended Fort Wayne/SDI workshop in October 2017)
Second, we include a tour of a working steel mill as part of our program. It is invaluable to go through the steelmaking processes in the classroom and then view how steel is made and rolled into plate or flat rolled products at a working steel mill.
A third reason for the success of our workshop is the diversity of the people and companies that attend. SMU has been conducting Steel 101 workshops across the country since 2011. We have trained well over 500 people who continue to work and grow in sales, purchasing, customer service, logistics, financial, operations and executive level positions. We try to keep our class size reasonable, averaging 25-30 attendees plus our instructors. We provide a good networking environment, and we have been told that relationships between companies and instructors continue long after the workshop is over.
“Having participated in other similar steel courses and mill tours, I have to say this is the best and most complete one I have had the privilege of attending. All the instructors were very knowledgeable and personable. The course is geared to accommodate all levels of steel people. Nothing about the course was dull or too high level that made things difficult to understand or follow. The course was lively and flowed very well. The mill tour and staff at the mill was an excellent bonus to this course. Hats off to the SMU staff for putting this course together…well worth the time invested!” Michael J. Trocchio, Jr., Account Manager, Kloeckner Metals Corp. (Mount Pleasant, SC/Nucor Berkeley workshop January 2015)
You can find more information about the Mobile workshop, which will be held Jan. 24-25, 2018, on our website: www.SteelMarketUpdate.com or by contacting our offices at: 800-432-3475.
