I apologize in advance if it seems like I have an overly narrow focus (conference, conference, conference – Steel 101 workshop). Our conference is but a few weeks away and there are literally hundreds of things that need to get done (and get done correctly) before we even travel to Atlanta. I have been in contact with the speakers over the past couple of days going over the schedule (expanded version, which we have as an article in tonight’s issue) to make sure everyone is on the same page and moving in the same direction.
On Monday, we reached 560 registrations and today (Tuesday) we hit 570. I don’t know if we will hit 600 attendees but, if not, it will be close.
Note: The Atlanta Airport Marriott Gateway Hotel (host hotel) is sold out. There are rooms at the Atlanta Airport SpringHill Suites Gateway Hotel and the Atlanta Airport Renaissance Gateway Hotel. All SMU special rates for rooms have been sold out. We are already working on expanding our room block for the 2018 SMU Steel Summit Conference, which will again be in the Georgia International Convention Center, and we will again be using the same three hotels located next to the GICC (Marriott Gateway, SpringHill Suites, Renaissance Gateway).
The SMU Events App – A Must When Attending SMU Steel Summit Conference
A note or reminder for those attending our SMU Steel Summit Conference: The attendees are listed in the Steel Market Update (SMU) Events App. Downloading the App from your smart phone’s App store is critical for getting the maximum experience out of the conference. The App contains the most up-to-date schedule, speakers’ biographies, attendee list, polling and surveys that we use prior to and during the conference, social media platform from which you can tweet, use Facebook or LinkedIn. It is also where you will be able to retrieve the speakers’ presentations. If you have not received instructions on how to download and use the App, please contact Brett Linton at: Brett@SteelMarketUpdate.com. Anybody can download the App, but only registered attendees will be able to log in and access the data.
If you have attended the 2016 and 2015 conferences, you are still able to access the data and speaker presentations in our App. Next year you will still be able to access the 2017 presentations. This is one of the advantages of attending the SMU conference.
Speaking of Steel 101 – we have about 10 spots left in our Oct. 4-5 workshop, which will be held in Fort Wayne, Ind., and will include a tour of the SDI Butler steel mill. We are working with our schedule to also include a tour of an operating steel service center located next to the mill. SDI always does an excellent tour for us, and we are looking forward to working with their team once again. You can find more details about the workshop on our website or you are welcome to contact our offices at 800-432-3475 or 706-216-2140.
Conference, conference, conference, Steel 101…and happy birthday to SMU!
As always, your business is truly appreciated by all of us here at Steel Market Update.

“We’ll always have Paris,” as the famous line in Casablanca goes. And this month, the global steel industry did as well. The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Steel Committee met in the City of Lights earlier this month. There was also a meeting of the Global Forum addressing excess steel capacity.

It’s once again A Tale of Two Cities in the steel market. Some are almost euphoric about Trump’s victory. Others, some rather bearish, are more focused on the day-to-day market between now and Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.

One of the perhaps unintentional perks of being a trade journalist is the opportunity to travel and cover an array of industry conferences and events. Some I've attended have been at fun locations, like Palm Springs and Tampa, Fla. Others have been in more practical locations, like SMU’s Steel Summit in Atlanta and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) meetings in Washington, D.C.

t this point in the game I think what we can say about Nippon Steel’s proposed buy of Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel is that it will go through, it won’t go through, or the outcome will be something new and completely unexpected. Then again, I’m probably still missing a few options.

President-elect Donald Trump continues to send shockwaves through the political establishment (again). And steel markets and ferrous scrap markets continue to be, well, anything but shocking. As the French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote in 1849, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." (I thought the quote might have been Yankees catcher Yogi Berra in 1949. Google taught me something new today.)
