Comparison Price Indices: Sheet Prices Up, Plate Prices Down
Written by John Packard
November 6, 2016
Flat rolled steel prices have begun their ascent as the $30 per ton price increase begins to be collected by the domestic steel mills.
Both Platts and Steel Market Update have hot rolled prices moving up by $10 per ton this past week with SMU at $480 and Platts at $485 per ton by week’s end. SteelBenchmarker did not report prices this past week as they only report prices twice during any one month.
Cold rolled prices also rose with SMU up $10 and Platts up $5 to $695 and $700 per ton respectively.
Galvanized prices were up $23 per ton and Galvalume $25 per ton.
Plate prices are now lower than hot rolled (normally there is a premium for plate) with Platts taking their plate price average down $20 per ton to $460 per ton.
FOB points for each index:
SMU: Domestic Mill, East of the Rockies.
SteelBenchmarker: Domestic Mill, East of the Mississippi.
Platts: Northern Indiana Domestic Mill.
Note that SteelBenchmarker produces numbers twice per month. On the weeks they produce numbers we will include them in the average. The weeks where they do not produce numbers (NA = not available) we will not include their outdated numbers in the CPI average.
