Written by Sandy Williams
April 19, 2016
NLMK USA crude steel production of 160,000 tonnes was a 94 percent increase quarter over quarter and a 68 percent increase year over year. The jump in production was due to the re-launch of steelmaking at NLMK Indiana after repairs at the end of 2015 as well as from improved steel demand. Capacity utilization improved to 82 percent in Q1 2016.
NLMK USA sales saw a 31 percent increase q/q to 470,000 tonnes driven by stronger demand from the construction and automotive industries.
Slab exports from NLMK Lipetsk to NLMK USA dropped to 160,000 tonnes as NLMK Indiana drew down slab inventory and increased steel output.
NLMK Group sales for first quarter 2016 increased 7 percent quarter over quarter to 4 million tonnes. Steel production was up 3 percent to 4 million tonnes. Capacity utilization for NLMK Group exceeded 90 percent.
