To those of you who receive invitations to participate in our flat rolled steel market questionnaire (survey) we will send out invitations for the early June analysis on Monday, June 1st at 8 AM. The survey will remain open until Thursday afternoon. Please take a few moments to click on the button (link) which will take you to the latest questions.
Our next Steel 101: Introduction to Steel Making & Market Fundamentals workshop is now online and open for registration. The workshop will be held on October 6 & 7, 2015 at the Radisson Quad Cities Plaza in Davenport, Iowa. Included in this workshop will be a tour of the SSAB mini-mill which is located in Montpelier, IA.
We just concluded one of our Steel 101 workshops just outside of Chicago and we toured the NLMK USA mini-mill in Portage, Indiana. Here is what one of the attendees had to say about the workshop, “Enjoyed Steel 101, very informative- I think the best part was being able to see the electric arc furnace at the mill. Classes were very helpful and allowed me to better understand the steel making process. The material that was covered was very informative, as I am very new to the steel industry and was unaware of the process and materials that make up steel. Now I have a much better understanding of the entire process. I would recommend this class to others that are new to the steel industry as it allows you to put the entire picture together- Thank You, it was a pleasure meeting you all and I enjoyed your class and allowing me to tour the mill. Thanks, Rachel Hindel, Heating & Cooling Products.”
Another of our attendees keep his comments short and sweet with, “5 stars.”
I want to invite you, or a member of your company, to come join us in the Quad Cities (Davenport, IA) in early October. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact either myself (John@SteelMarketUpdate.com) or our office: 800-432-3475 and we will do our best to assist you.
For those attending Steel Success Strategies (SSS) in New York City next week, I will be at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch dinner on Monday evening and I will be in the city until Wednesday afternoon. If you would like to set up a time to meet, please contact me either by email: John@SteelMarketUpdate.com or on my cell phone: 770-596-6268.
The following week I will be in Chicago as I am speaking at a Bank of America dinner on the 17th and then I will be attending the Association of Steel Distributors (ASD) regional meeting in Chicago on the 18th.
As always your business is truly appreciated by all of us here at Steel Market Update.

It’s once again A Tale of Two Cities in the steel market. Some are almost euphoric about Trump’s victory. Others, some rather bearish, are more focused on the day-to-day market between now and Inauguration Day on Jan. 20.

One of the perhaps unintentional perks of being a trade journalist is the opportunity to travel and cover an array of industry conferences and events. Some I've attended have been at fun locations, like Palm Springs and Tampa, Fla. Others have been in more practical locations, like SMU’s Steel Summit in Atlanta and American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) meetings in Washington, D.C.

t this point in the game I think what we can say about Nippon Steel’s proposed buy of Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel is that it will go through, it won’t go through, or the outcome will be something new and completely unexpected. Then again, I’m probably still missing a few options.

President-elect Donald Trump continues to send shockwaves through the political establishment (again). And steel markets and ferrous scrap markets continue to be, well, anything but shocking. As the French writer Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr wrote in 1849, "The more things change, the more they stay the same." (I thought the quote might have been Yankees catcher Yogi Berra in 1949. Google taught me something new today.)

President-elect Donald Trump will officially retake the White House on Jan. 20. I’ve been getting questions about how his administration’s policies might reshape the steel industry and domestic manufacturing. I covered the tumult and norm busting of Trump's first term: Section 232, Section 301, USMCA - and that's just on the trade policy side of things. It's safe to say that we'll have no shortage of news in 2025 when it comes to trade and tariffs.
