September 29, 2014
To cap off its 30th anniversary, California Steel Industries, Inc. (CSI) announced production of the first pipe from the new electrical resistance welded (ERW) pipe mill at CSI Tubular Products (CSITP). The announcement coincided with celebration, invitation-only tour of the $100 million pipe mill at CSITP.
The new mill will feature API (American Petroleum Institute, grade high-strength line pipe, using induction welding technology. Full body ultrasonic lamination testing and ultrasonic weld seam inspection is also featured at the mill.
With the addition of the No. 2 Pipe Mill, CSITP will now offer finished API pipe sizes of 4.5 inches to 24 inches in diameter and up to 80 feet in length, with wall thickness of 0.156 to 0.75 inches in various high-strength grades. Previously, the company was limited to 16 inches in diameter, up to 60 foot lengths, and 0.406 inch wall thickness.
With an annual expected production capacity of 400,000 net tons, the No. 2 mill increases CSIPT’s total tubular capacity to over 600,000 tons. At full capacity, the extra tons are expected to generate 200 new production and logistics jobs.
CSI, located in Fontana, Calif., produces nearly 3 million tons of flat rolled steel annually, including hot rolled, cold rolled and galvanized sheet products. The company employs approximately 1100 non-union employees.
CSI President and CEO Toshiyuki “Ted” Tamai said CSI is proud to have reached 30 years as a strong and viable steel manufacturer, with no layoffs of regular employees in the Company’s history.
