A locomotive operator at the Nucor Steel Arkansas Hickman facility died from a head injury Tuesday morning after the train he was riding on derailed. Mr. Thomas Dazey, 48, who has been employed at Nucor for 18 years, was pronounced dead at the scene by Mississippi County Coroner Mike Godsey.
The Blytheville Courier News reported employees began searching for Dazey when they noticed his absence. He was discovered around 4:15 am.
The company temporarily suspended operations immediately following the incident, said Vice President and General Manager Sam Commella. An investigation is now underway by Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) officials and local authorities.
“On behalf of all our Nucor teammates, I want to express my deepest sympathies to the family and friends of Thomas Dazey. We are deeply saddened by this event.” said Commella in a statement from the company.
Operations are scheduled to resume Tuesday evening and members of Nucor’s employee assistance program will be available to meet with teammates.
