We are looking forward to 2013. This year will be a year of growth and change at Steel Market Update. Over my steel career I learned it was necessary to keep pace with the changes occurring within the industry. Better yet, if you could lead the changes then you have an edge up on the competition.
We are looking forward to 2013. This year will be a year of growth and change at Steel Market Update. Over my steel career I learned it was necessary to keep pace with the changes occurring within the industry. Better yet, if you could lead the changes then you have an edge up on the competition.
Over the next couple of weeks our readers will begin to get early glimpses of the new look of our newsletter – at least a partial look. Once we begin, we do not anticipate returning to this template which has worked well over the past four years or so. But, we need to move on.
The new look and delivery will continue to be associated with our existing website. Over time, this too will change as we move to our new website.
The changes we envision will still take some time to complete. We are at the nitty-gritty stage – the stage where I wish I had four times as many employees and more hours in the day.
I begin the New Year as I do every year – optimistic that this year will be better than the last, business will grow for everyone and profits will be plentiful.
Of course, I have similar thoughts as I enter the voting booth and send our local representatives to the House of Representatives, the Senate and, of course, the President of the United States…
Things don’t always end up like you think they should.
But on the first business day of the year you count your blessings – and for us at Steel Market Update our biggest blessing is our loyal customers. We appreciate the way you champion our brand to the industry – SMU would not be as recognized without your assistance and support. We also thank you for interacting with us whether it be at one of our workshops, conference or by contacting us in our office and making suggestions/comments/questions – many of which are worked into ideas for our articles.
I like to end each newsletter with something I wish more businesses (all businesses) would spend more time expressing this simple sentiment to their customers: your business is truly appreciated. For those of us here at Steel Market Update each and every one of our customer’s business is indeed truly appreciated.
Happy New Year and we wish each and all of you good health and prosperity for 2013.

The difference: The spat with Turkey was a big deal for steel. This time, the 50% reciprocal tariff for Brazil – if it goes into effect as threatened on Aug.1 – hits everything from coffee and to pig iron. It seems almost custom-built to inflict as much pain as possible on Brazil.

CRU: Excessive global supply could hit rebar mill investments in US
Following the onset of the war in Ukraine in March 2022, concerns about import availability and expectations of rising demand from President Biden’s Infrastructure Bill pushed US rebar prices to record highs. In response, a flurry of new mills and capacity expansions were announced to meet the rise in demand from growth in the construction […]

Steel buyer spirits tempered by soft spot market conditions
Steel sheet buyers report feeling bogged down by the ongoing stresses of stagnant demand, news fatigue, tariff negotiations or implementation timelines, and persistent macroeconomic uncertainty.

CRU: US stainless prices to rise on expanded S232 tariffs
Stainless prices in the US market will rise, following price increases by major US producers. Our base case scenario incorporates higher US prices in the near term, despite the initial negative reaction by the market. US stainless prices will go up in 2025 H2 and will stay elevated in 2026 as tariffs on stainless […]
